Program Description
The program in Spanish at Utah Tech allows students to immerse themselves in any Spanish-speaking culture. They will be able to use these necessary skills for research, translating and teaching not only the language, but also the literature and the culture of Spanish-speaking country. Traditionally, Spanish major students work as elementary or secondary education teachers. Lately, teaching has expanded to include Dual Language Immersion programs and magnet schools. For some students, a humanities degree in an entry step into graduate school. It is becoming increasingly common for Spanish majors to be accepted in graduate degree programs in law, social and health sciences after completing a degree in Spanish. Our students have multiple opportunities to use their knowledge throughout their program: Study abroad programs, interpreting opportunities at schools, and the Dental Hygiene program are some of the opportunities student have. Because of the interpersonal nature of languages and cultures, all of our courses focus on a communicative approach having our students practice real-life situations in meaningful context.

Utah Tech General Education Requirements
All Utah Tech General Education requirements must be fulfilled. A previously earned degree may fulfill those requirements, but courses must be equivalent to Utah Tech's minimum General Education standards in American Institutions, English, and Mathematics.

Introductory Information to Spanish Degree
Students can begin taking the required courses for the Spanish major in one of three ways:
1. By beginning with any of the lower division courses (SPAN 1010, 1020, 2010, or 2020), depending on a student’s background. Students who begin with 1020, 2010, or 2020 may receive vertical credits for the lower classes, if needed, according to policy.
2. By beginning with SPAN 3010 for heritage Spanish speakers1. If needed, students can receive vertical credits for the classes skipped, according to policy.
3. By beginning with SPAN 3060 for native speakers1 or students who have lived in a Spanish speaking environment for 1.5 years or more. If needed, students can receive vertical credits for the classes skipped, according to policy.
The Bachelor of Arts foreign language requirement may be filled with any of these three options as soon as the student receives credit for either SPAN 2020 or SPAN 3060.
Placement in foreign language classes is at the discretion of the Department Chair.

Graduation Requirements
- Complete a minimum of 120 college-level credits (1000 and above).
- Complete at least 40 upper-division credits (3000 and above).
- Complete at least 30 upper-division credits at Utah Tech for institutional residency.
- Cumulative GPA 2.0 or higher.
- Grade C or higher in each Core Discipline and Emphasis course.
