American Sign Language, AA
Program Description
The Associate of Arts in American Sign Language (ASL) is stacked within the BA in ASL/English Interpreting and is designed for students that have an interest in learning and improving their conversational skills in ASL. Courses are designed to develop vocabulary and communication ability. While all students will gain foundational knowledge in ASL, some may decide to continue on to complete the BA in ASL/English Interpreting and others who select a different major may also find value in the ability to communicate in ASL in a variety of other career options. This degree is also designed to better facilitate transfer students completing an Associates degree elsewhere to know what content is required at this level so they can move seamlessly into our BA program.
Admission Requirements
Students can begin taking the required courses for the AA in American Sign Language in one of two ways:
- By beginning with any of the lower division courses (ASL 1010, 1020, 2010, or 2020--the first class depends on a student's background in ASL). Students who begin with 1020, 2010, or 2020 may receive vertical credits for the lower classes, if needed, according to policy. ASL 1500 and ASL 2000 are not eligible for vertical credits.
- By taking the courses in sequence.
